Why a frozen pipe actually bursts

Frozen pipes are one of the most common and most damaging winter water losses we respond to in the foothills, and the way they fail surprises a lot of homeowners. The pipe does not usually split where the ice is, it bursts somewhere along the line because of pressure. When water freezes it expands, and in a closed pipe that expansion drives pressure ahead of the ice toward any closed faucet or fixture. That trapped, building pressure is what ruptures the pipe, often at a fitting or a weak point well away from the frozen section.

The damage is rarely visible while the pipe is frozen, because the ice plug itself holds the water back. The flood comes when things thaw, the ice melts, the rupture opens, and water pours out, frequently while no one is home or while the family is asleep. Open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so household heat can reach the pipes, and let a faucet served by a vulnerable run drip slightly, because moving water and the relieved pressure both make a freeze far less likely.

If you leave the home in winter, never let it go cold. Keep the heat at a safe minimum, have someone check on it during a freeze, and consider shutting off and draining the water supply if the house will be empty for an extended cold stretch. The homes that burst over a winter trip are almost always the ones left cold with the water on.

If a pipe bursts anyway

If you find a frozen pipe before it bursts, shut off the water supply to that line or to the house, then thaw the pipe gently with warm air, never an open flame, while a faucet is open so melting water and pressure have somewhere to go. If a pipe has already burst, shut off the main water supply immediately, kill power to the affected area if water has reached anything electrical, and call for help.
